I am applying to The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS)’s 2-year M.FA program to study comics, graphic novels, etc. This is a story I submitted as a part of my application. I had to create a story that includes these characters: me, a robot, a fruit, and a snowman. One of us have to speak a foreign (real or imaginary) language. Naturally I picked si5s (written American Sign Language). I’m sure I made several mistakes with si5s- I am still very new to si5s! You can learn more about si5s at: http://www.si5s.org/ And, you can check out CCS’s website at: http://www.cartoonstudies.org/

Don’t worry if you can’t read si5s. I’ve written the story intended for general audience to read.
Enjoy! :)

Dress up vp

Deaf problem #457: Having to look nicer whenever making calls. Don’t tell me you don’t do the same thing whenever you need to make a VP call using interpreters. ;)

For those who are new, VP means Videophone (similar to facetime). We deafies use VP to make calls. We can directly call other deaf people. But if we want to call hearing people, we have to go through ASL interpreters from the relay company. I don’t care if I’m wearing pajamas in front of friends. But with ASL interpreters- it’s just weird to have strangers see you wearing pajamas haha.

[6 Panels]

[Panel 1: Ryan, Alexis’s boyfriend, is sitting at dining table. He has iPad and a cup of coffee in front of him. Alexis was wearing a pokemon t-shirt, pajamas shorts, and her hair is messy. She lent in and kissed Ryan on side of his forehead. Alexis said, “I gotta go and get dressed.”]

[Panel 2: Ryan asked, “Why? Pajamas look sexy on you on Sundays!” Alexis blushed, “Oh stop!”]

[Panel 3: Alexis was changing her clothes. Ryan walked in and said, “Hey.”]

[Panel 4: Ryan asked Alexis, “Are you going out to a store?” Alexis, putting on a nice shirt, replied, “No.”]

[Panel 5: Brushing her hair, Alexis continued, “… I need to make a VP call.” Ryan paused, “… You’re dressing up for a VP call?” Alexis replied sheepishly, “… Yes.”]

[Panel 6: Ryan grinned, “You know VP interpreters won’t judge your messy hair and Pokemon t-shirt.” Alexis furrowed her brows and jokingly said, “Shush!”]
